Gerde’s Folk City was the legendary music venue and bar where artists from the 60’s to the 90’s came to explore, express and search for music, success, love, friendship and fame. Artists like Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Judy Collins, Johnny Cash, John Lee Hooker, Simon & Garfunkel, Loudon Wainwright, Arlo Guthrie, Phoebe Snow, Suzanne Vega, Lucinda Williams etc.
Folk City, the musical, based on Robbie Woliver’s books “Bringing It All Back Home” and “Hoot,” follows a group of young artists searching for their own path to success, love and fame. Friday November 22nd was the staged reading wherein I was lucky enough to play the part of Jazz, a Beatnik poetess and acerbic bartender, a true Bohemian who explores the world of music, art, protest and drugs. Set from 1961 to 1986, the Viet Nam war looms over each character and event with such weight that it becomes exceedingly clear how much it shaped the musicians and artists of that era. The play features the folk, blues, and rock songs from the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s with each character singing and performing in their own unique style.
I had the most incredible time working and creating with everyone involved, this was the first step, for me, in a hopefully long and wonderful journey. The extremely talented cast includes Ryan Rickenbach, Hallie Wage, Cass Dillon, Famecia Ward, Judah Frank, Kim Vogels, Vinnie Vok and Danny Rose. Directed by the amazing David Marquez, written by Bernadette Contreras and Folk City’s previous owner Robbie Woliver, Stage Manager Zach Perez, Musical Director Zachary Goodman, produced by Chip Quigley and Kingdom Entertainment, casting by J&R Creative Casting Agency.
